Description
A latent image is the invisible image held in a film’s emulsion after exposure, before development. The photograph already exists the moment you press the shutter. It simply hasn’t appeared yet.
Latent is a camera for creating your own film looks, and a darkroom you can take anywhere. Choose a look, preview it live, and take the shot. Afterwards, return to the preserved original: try another film, adjust the exposure, and develop it again.
From everyday snapshots to thoughtful color work, give each photograph room to become your own.
CAPTURE THE MOMENT
- Shoot Apple ProRAW (DNG) at up to 48MP on supported devices, with HEIC capture available on devices without ProRAW.
- Adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed, ISO, focus, and white balance with a swipe.
- Tap to focus and meter. Press and hold to lock focus and exposure.
- Switch between supported lenses and focal lengths, with 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, and 1:1 aspect ratios.
- Capture in HDR, with 10-bit HEIF output enabled by default for smoother skies and color gradients.
- Launch into capture from the Lock Screen using Camera Control, and choose whether Volume Up focuses or takes a photo.
- Keep shooting while your previous photo develops.
FIND YOUR COLORS
- Discover new looks in the Film Shop. Browse HDR samples, press and hold to compare with the original, and add favorites to your film library.
- Shape tone, warmth, saturation, grain, and vignette with intuitive controls, then save your adjustments as your own film roll.
- Extract a style from a reference photo as a starting point for a new recipe.
- Preview, reorder, and organize film rolls into folders.
- Import .cube, .3dl, and .csp LUTs, including LUTs designed for input spaces such as Apple Log 2, S-Log3, and F-Log.
- Export a film roll’s color adjustments as a .cube LUT to use in other compatible apps.
YOUR POCKET DARKROOM
- See adjustments as you make them, whether you’re composing a shot or editing a photograph.
- Press and hold an adjustment to access deeper controls: highlights, shadows, whites, blacks, curves, eight-color HSL, and three-way color wheels.
- Keep a selected color in a black-and-white image, fine-tune grain size and hardness, or brighten the edges with the vignette control.
- Dots mark modified adjustments. Double-tap to reset and keep experimenting.
SHAPE THE LIGHT
- Mist: Soften highlights and add a gentle haze.
- Star: Turn points of light into starbursts, with adjustable patterns, direction, and length.
- Halation: Add a warm, film-like glow around bright edges.
- Combine all three effects and adjust their strengths independently.
ONE PHOTO, MORE POSSIBILITIES
- Preserve the original image without the film look applied. Enable ProRAW on a supported device to retain the DNG negative too.
- Change film rolls, refine color, correct exposure, rotate, straighten, and crop without altering the original.
- Photos saved through the system’s photo-editing workflow can also be reverted in Photos.
- Import existing photos and give them a new look.
- Choose to keep new shots inside Latent, then save your favorites to Photos.
An interactive walkthrough and contextual gesture tips help you get to know the camera and darkroom. Available in English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
Some capture features depend on device and lens support. Exported LUTs contain color adjustments only, excluding grain, vignette, and lens effects. Photos stored only in Latent are not included in iCloud Backup and are deleted when the app is removed. Save photos you want to keep to Photos.
