Description
Every town has a road you've never turned down. Every neighborhood has a block you've never walked. This is a reason to go.
You get a bearing and a distance. That's it. No route, no blue line, no picture of what you're looking for. Somewhere out there is a real thing worth seeing, and the only way to reach it is to read the landscape and work it out.
Wrong turns are the game. So is arguing about which road it is. Someone drives and someone reads the instrument, and the one reading it has the better job.
WHAT IT IS
A compass bearing to a real place near you, and nothing else.
You say how far you're willing to go, on foot or by car. The app picks somewhere inside that and points at it. It never tells you what you're looking for, never routes you, and never says you're going the wrong way.
Most places tell you what they are when you get there — a plaque, a name, a sign. Some don't. Some are a post in the weeds, or a bridge, or nothing left at all. When you get there, the app names the place. Getting there is the game; whether you find it is the story.
682,560 REAL PLACES, ALL FIFTY STATES
Historical markers, monuments, bridges, lighthouses, murals, water towers, and every geodetic survey mark still believed to be there — brass disks set flush in the ground, invisible until you are standing on one.
The survey marks start switched off. Turn them on and your own street fills in.
All of it public-domain or openly licensed, and published openly so you can check our work. We checked it first, against an independent witness wherever one exists: 1,045 coordinates corrected, and the 5,917 we could not stand behind are flagged in the data and kept out of play.
ON FOOT
The same game at walking pace, from your own front door. No car, no highway, no planning — a couple of blocks and a thing you have walked past for years without seeing. It is the version you can play with a kid.
IT IS BUILT FOR THE CAR, AND THAT SHAPED EVERYTHING
The primary channel is sound, so you never have to look at the screen. Nothing is timed. Nothing needs answering. Arrival can be ignored completely.
There is no score for getting there faster. The only thing measured is how DIRECTLY you read the roads — a number you cannot improve by speeding, which is why it is the number we chose.
It also means weather is not a reason to stay in. Everything else you might do outdoors gets worse in the cold and the dark. This does not. The car is warm and the roads are emptier.
THE LOGBOOK
Every outing recorded: how far, how direct, what you found, and whether anyone had ever found it before you. Photographs stay on your phone.
