Description

“Voices of the Boyne” is a locative, musical AR game set across layers of time, reflecting on the history of Ireland. The layers include: Neolithic Ireland, with characters such as the Salmon of Knowledge and a Celtic Child, the Battle of the Boyne 1690 between King William III and King James II for political powers in Europe, and Modern Ireland, with contemporary Irish music and Irish traditional music. Guided by sound, not by maps, you’ll encounter voices, music, and unexpected challenges that bring the landscape alive. A Raven and a Fox are your companions through Time Travel: the Raven brings you back in time, and the Fox brings you forward. Recognise their voices and follow the audible cues. The Battle Oak witnessed the events that took place in 1690 - he is the narrator of the game. Move through Neolithic rituals, the clash of 1690, and echoes of today. Collect artefacts, evade adversaries, and uncover fragments of history woven into playful interaction. Be aware of mercenaries - you must turn to face them - face your fears and you prevail! The app features a rich tapestry of music: compositions for kings by 17th century composers John Playford, Henry Purcell, and Jean Baptiste Lully, original music for nature characters by Svetlana Rudenko, traditional music by Tim Doyle, and contemporary works by John Buckley, Elaine Agnew, and Ian Wilson. It is an experience where place, sound, and imagination merge into a game of discovery, staged on the field of Battle of the Boyne, Ireland. “Voices of the Boyne” is developed as part of the LoGaCulture project at the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), Ireland.
