MISLAND is a land degradation monitoring and decision-support app developed under the GMES & Africa programme to support African countries in tracking progress toward SDG Indicator 15.3.1 (proportion of degraded land) and achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN). The platform delivers timely, multi-scale geospatial information derived from Earth observation data captured by MODIS, Landsat, and Sentinel‑2 satellites. MISLAND provides analysis across six key environmental indicators: - SDG 15.3.1 Core Metrics: Land cover change, land productivity dynamics, and carbon stock trends - Vegetation Loss/Gain: Based on NDVI, MSAVI, and SAVI vegetation index time series - Forest Monitoring: Forest loss, carbon emission hotspots, fire risk zones, and post-fire assessment - Desertification Sensitivity: Based on the MEDALUS model (soil, climate, vegetation, land use) - Soil Erosion: Risk mapping of wind and water erosion across vulnerable regions - Coastal Erosion: Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI), integrating slope, sea-level rise and other factors MISLAND equips policymakers, land planners, and researchers with actionable tools to detect degradation, assess drivers, and support sustainable land use decisions.
