Description
SlashScan is an iOS application for real-time estimation and mapping of forest slash-pile volumes using the built-in LiDAR sensor of iPad Pro devices.
Developed through research at Oregon State University’s College of Forestry, SlashScan provides an accurate, portable, and field-ready solution for forestry operations, biomass inventory, and research applications.
■ Key Features
Real-time 3D Scanning: Capture detailed point clouds of slash piles using the iPad’s LiDAR sensor.
Automated Mesh Reconstruction: Generate precise 3D models optimized for irregular pile geometries.
Accurate Volume Estimation: Instantly compute pile volume and export results for analysis or reporting.
Integrated Mapping: GNSS tagging and satellite map view allow users to visualize and manage multiple pile locations.
Offline Capability: All processing—scanning, reconstruction, and volume computation—occurs locally, enabling use in remote forest sites without internet access.
■ Applications
SlashScan supports operational and research applications such as:
Forest biomass and slash-pile inventory
Post-harvest residue and fuel-load management
Validation of UAV-LiDAR and photogrammetric surveys
Educational demonstrations in forest engineering and remote sensing
■ Supported Devices
SlashScan requires a LiDAR-equipped iOS device.
