Letter Set Typography

A cave painting, hidden for centuries in the Lascaux network. A cuneiform tablet, waiting for millennia beneath the earth. A papyrus scroll, entombed amongst the ash in Pompeii. The work of an artist, the sign of one's hand; the idea made permanent through perseverance, practice and piedmont. I miss imperfection. I miss being able to see the artist’s hand behind their work. I do not accept that the digital tools we use have to hide these things, even in lettering. Let's celebrate the artistic rendition of information, together. Let's remember the struggle of exact character placement, the misadventures of substituting a zero for an O, the beauty of a printed font catalog, and the tactile sensation of using rub-on lettering in an era well before the phrase "Desktop publishing" meant anything other than what one did on a desk.
