In this crossword game, the board positions have randomly-assigned values, and the object of the game is to maximize the total value of positions you control by your word plays, either by filling empty positions, or by taking over opponent positions. With the words you play, you project power on the board. And the net projected power on a position by you and your opponent (the machine) determines that position's risk of capture. Pressure to play quickly is maintained by allowing the machine to play out of turn after waiting only a limited time to receive a play from you. Lower play levels limit the machine's vocabulary and make it easier to win. Faster speeds allow you less time to think, allow the machine quicker out-of-turn plays, and make it harder to win.
