A FEW HOURS EACH YEAR HAVE A BIG IMPACT A few times per year, when the electricity grid is totally maxed out, power companies have to spin up older, less-efficient power plants. This often happens on hot summer afternoons when everyone’s running their air conditioning. Spinning up and running these plants is so expensive and harmful to the environment, that the power company is willing to incentivize people to use less electricity during these peak times – we call them GridRewards events, and we’ll tell you when they’re happening. There are about 5-10 GridRewards events per year.
